After enrolling in Medicare, you should receive a red, white and blue Medicare card by mail. A simple token of the benefits you deserve, here’s what you need to know about your Medicare card.
When to Expect Your New Medicare Card
If you’re automatically enrolled in Medicare insurance, you’ll get your new Medicare card in the mail three months before your 65th birthday or your 25th month of receiving disability benefits. If you do not qualify for automatic enrollment, you’ll have to enroll in Original Medicare to receive your new Medicare card and associated coverage. If you’re signed up for a Medicare Advantage plan, Medicare Prescription Drug plan, a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan—or have Medicaid—you’ll be mailed a separate membership card along with your Original Medicare card.
How to Use Your New Medicare Card
Your new Medicare card is unique to you and your coverage, and you’ll want to carry it with you at all times. Your card shows the dates your Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B coverage begin, as well as your Medicare number, which serves as an identification number in the Medicare system.
If you’re signed up for a Medicare Advantage plan, Part D, a Medigap plan—or have Medicaid—you will use your plan’s card instead of your Original Medicare card when you go to the doctor or hospital.
Medicare Card Replacement
If you lose your Medicare card, the quickest way to get a Medicare replacement card is to sign into your MyMedicare.gov account to print an official copy of your Medicare card. If you don’t have an account, visit MyMedicare.gov to create one.
