How To Guard Your Medicare Card

A Medicare beneficiary holds their Medicare insurance card and learns how to keep it protected

As a Medicare beneficiary, your Medicare card proves that you have Medicare health insurance and specifically shows if you have Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B or both, and the date your coverage began. Your card is unique to you and your coverage, and it’s one of the most important pieces of identification you own as a Medicare beneficiary. Here’s what to know about your Medicare card and how to protect it.

Protect Your Medicare Card and Social Security Number

Similar to your social security card, your Medicare card will have a Medicare number that’s unique to you. You’ll want to treat your card like a credit card in addition to the following actions:

  • Only give your Medicare number to doctors or insurers acting on your behalf, or those who work with Medicare, like your State Health Insurance Assistance Program.
  • Consider making a photocopy of your card and carry that around with you instead of carrying around your original Medicare card.
  • Keep your card visible and in good condition by protecting it with a plastic card holder sleeve or Medicare card protector.

Can I laminate my Medicare card?

The Social Security Administration advises that you do not laminate your Medicare card, as it can prevent detection of security features. Instead of laminating your card, consider carrying around a photocopy or protect it with a plastic sleeve.

Should I carry my Medicare card with me?

When you visit doctors, labs and medical facilities, you’ll want to bring your Medicare card with you. While your healthcare provider will typically make a photocopy of your card for their files, it’s still a good idea to bring it with you each time. However, if you find yourself without your Medicare card, your provider may be able to look up your Medicare number online.
